I illustrated this musically-themed wine label for “Round Midnight Syrah” for an advertising illustration class. “Round Midnight” was a 1944 jazz standard by pianist Thelonious Monk, so I decided to illustrate him playing a moon-shaped keyboard in the night sky.
I listened to a lot of jazz music while making this, and also made a new station on my Pandora for Thelonious Monk. I decided to use chalk pastels, which I had used in high school a bit but not much since then. I thought it would be a good choice, so I could blend colors really well and create a nice texture for the jazz atmosphere. It was quite a relaxing experience, to get my hands dirty in chalk while branching out my musical tastes…and sipping on some syrah.
