Angelia Becker on an adventure

I love to create + explore.

I work as a web designer at Patriot Software, a company in Canton, Ohio that provides accounting and payroll software for American small businesses. My role is pretty interesting because most of the work I do is for Patriot Software’s sister company, Top Echelon. Top Echelon helps recruiters make more placements through many different products and services. One of these services is recruiting websites – this is where I spend most of my time, designing and developing websites for recruiters across the country.

I love my job because I get to work on a variety of projects, and I feel like I learn something new every day! Whether it’s a new CSS trick or function in WordPress, or even a new technique in Photoshop, there is undoubtedly always going to be more to learn in my field. I’ve been working at Patriot Software for over two years now, and sometimes I am simply amazed at how much I’ve learned so far. I went from a graphic design graduate who had a very rough knowledge of HTML and CSS to a web designer who can design and build a cohesive website. On top of HTML and CSS, I now have a working knowledge of JavaScript, jQuery, and PHP. More importantly, I’ve developed a strong grasp on user interface design.

It’s a beautiful combination of logical problem solving and visual creativity.

I’m a BFA graduate of Kent State’s Visual Communication Design program. One of my design classes touched on web design, and we learned very basic HTML and CSS. My mind was blown that the whole INTERNET was made up of different combinations of letters and numbers. I tried bringing web design into projects in other classes from then on, so I could keep practicing code. I enjoy the unique position of web being a web designer, so that I get to use “both sides of my brain” – it’s a beautiful combination of logical problem solving and visual creativity.

The real learning came on the job. And now here I am!
